Season 2 episode 6, “The Doomsday Machine” - one of my favorites, and William Windom’s work was incredible, especially the one scene that this is taken from.

It probably depends on what you want out of Trek, there are so many iconic episodes in the original series that would also be great intros.

S1E4 - The Naked Time would let you understand 50% of the Trek memes on Lemmy, and I’m only exaggerating a little. Also it’s a great character episode

S1E14 - Balance of Terror is good for an intro to the suspenseful space battle aspect of Trek, along with commentary on racism (a staple of the series)

S1E25 - The Devil In The Dark is a good introduction to Trek ideals about interaction with non-humanoid sapients

IMO past season 1 it becomes harder to find good intro episodes because they’re more impactful with more familiarity with the characters.

I’m personally extremely biased in favor of ToS, but TNG has more episodes and budget. I would say if you want to check out TNG look up a recommended watch list or something, because season 1 is kind of rough. To the extent that “Riker’s beard” (a character that went from clean shaven to having a beard in season 2) is the opposite of “jumping the shark” lol.

I just want to reinforce that TNG started out on the wrong side of the shark and improved a lot. Some of those first season episodes are hard to watch. Don’t give up too soon!

(They’re not all terrible, nor are all of season 2’s episodes winners, but it definitely started out rough and got better.)

It’s self contained, I don’t think there’s much you need to know to understand what’s going on.

If we had some good writers, and a good director, I wouldn’t mind a soft reboot of TOS. As long as it doesn’t break canon, I think it’d be fine. (Of course, with multiple timelines, who’s to say what’s canon?)
