Never met a vegan who did that. It’s just that most omnis can’t differentiate between systemic criticism and personal insult.
In my work, for years they didn’t knew I’m vegan (granted, i work mostly remotely and go to the office one or two weeks every few months, as its in a different city), but once i mentioned why i didn’t grab x item from the cafeteria menu, and just the lentils, i casually mentioned it.
Now, for some reason, that person that i was with is the one that mention to everyone in almost every conversation that im vegan, almost unprompted, when for some reason somebody is discussing about food.
I know that the coworker hasn’t been a dick and showed interest when making questions and all, but i don’t really understand why it has to announce that Im vegan if i haven’t do it nor pushed my views onto others coworkers
Coworker in random conversation: “Here, have something vegan instead.”
* Pushes @Optional@piefed.social towards conversation partner. *There is very little personal to talk about that gets organically brought up in the workplace, I’ve found. Maybe they are trying to include you more or latching on to something that is genuinely interesting instead of the boring normal shit like talking about the weather, sports, or more work.
As someone that has known many vegans over the years, there are definitely some that make it part of their core personality and make sure everybody knows. Most don’t but some do. Because people are people.
How do you know someones a carnist? Don’t worry, they’ll tell you.
Yeah I haven’t seen many vegan memes around here but the carnism passes without question.
cook, don’t 🙊
When you phrase systemic criticisms as personal insults, I can see why they might get the two confused…
I should know. I’ve eaten at two vegan restaurants.

Yeah it’s hilarious when carnists post memes like this. Zero self-awareness. Likewise with the upvoters.
So, is it still unethical if you only eat human meat?
Remember to properly cook it 'cos of salmonela.

Found the Linux user!
You’ve already stepped into the “I’m vegan btw” by saying something like omni lol
I eat meat and you’re being a twat.
Veganism is a good cause and we can all learn a thing or two about sustainability from them. Stop acting like they’re out here to take your oh-so-precious meat away from you. Eat a vegetable or two so you can get that turd out of your ass.

Individuals must only be treated as ends, never as means.
It goes “never as a mere means.”
People always forget the “mere” part.
I wholly agree that beyond just sustainability, the reduction of suffering for animals is in the heart of veganism.
That being said, it’s not the most effective argument to sway us meat eaters. When people think of animal suffering, it brings shame and guilt and makes some people defensive. This is why some people hate vegans, because it’s a reflection of their own inadequacies. They revel at finding proselytizing vegans to pull apart because it lets them tell the world ‘See? This is what all vegans are like. I’m not like that and therefore I am a good person.’
Self-interest is the easiest way to goad people into thinking about veganism without hurting any egos. If you rephrase veganism as a matter of self-preservation and not a moral issue, people are more open to that.
It’s much easier to make the world eat 10% less meat than make 10% of everyone a vegan. Veganism for all isn’t the answer yet, because human incentives don’t work that way. Instead of promoting veganism, it’s much more achievable to ask people to do things like meatless Mondays.
Found the vegan.
I don’t think you can speak for all vegans. It’s a diet, not a religion.
From the Wikipedia page: “People who follow a vegan diet for the benefits to the environment, their health or for religion are regularly also described as vegans.”
it’s neither a diet nor a religion. it’s a philosophy and way of living
Diet:
1
a: food and drink regularly provided or consumed
a diet of fruits and vegetables; a vegetarian diet
b: habitual nourishment
links between diet and disease
c: the kind and amount of food prescribed for a person or animal for a special reason
was put on a low-sodium diet
https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/diet
Veganism is, by definition, a diet. It just happens to (often) be based on a philosophy by the same name.
You wouldn’t say “pragmatism isn’t an approach to problem solving! It’s a philosophy!” It’s both.
Dictionaries are often treated as the final arbiter in arguments over a word’s meaning, but they are not always well suited for settling disputes. The lexicographer’s role is to explain how words are (or have been) actually used, not how some may feel that they should be used, and they say nothing about the intrinsic nature of the thing named or described by a word, much less the significance it may have for individuals. When discussing concepts like veganism, therefore, it is prudent to recognize that quoting from a dictionary is unlikely to either mollify or persuade the person with whom one is arguing.

I did. I don’t think you did properly. You missed the part where it says “ethical Veganism” at the beginning of the second paragraph. You’re describing ethical Veganism, but the term Veganism can be used by many more people. To use your example, TERFs are feminists, but not all feminists are TERFs.

How the hell did you get all of that from my comment? Projecting much?
Veganism is a good cause a
i kind of doubt it.
I remember you! you’re the one recommending people download the fucking burger king app lol

that’s a mischaracterization of the conversation
lol mhmm.
I‘m an omni myself. I prefer it over „non-vegan“.

I tried to go vegan secretly once, it was a disaster. This country fucking hates vegans and health.
Just lets skip omnivores, flexitarians and vegetarians.

It just sounds weird. I guess it’s not wrong, but referring to the “normal” with a term that sounds like you’re referring to an outlier is weird.
just because you’re in the biggest “-ism” doesn’t mean you’re not in one.
Yes, but it doesn’t make it any less unusual to refer to it that way.
it may feel unusual to you
Yes? What’s your point?
Would you prefer bloodmouth? Or maybe animal abuser?
Well that would be really in the “I’m a vegan btw”. Way more so!

No, it’s not. Quit projecting.

You sound so smart!
I am in awe of your self righteousness.
carnism only has one n.
So we shouldn’t call people heterosexual or cisgender?
It having a name is not treating it as an outlier. It’s just using the name. Omnivorous: you eat any kind of food.
I also thought calling people cishet was weird. Though I guess I got used to seeing it since I visit places where the terminology is common.
Most people who aren’t on social media much probably barely know the term.
I’ve met many, most simply aren’t aware.
It’s funny that you mention most omnis can’t differentiate. Because if you’d shut up about being vegan, there wouldn’t even be a need to differentiate anything.
If you’d stop making hating vegans your entire personality the rest us normal meat eaters wouldn’t have to clarify how we aren’t one of you.
No idea what you’re talking about, I don’t hate vegans? Just saying some are ruining it for the rest of us and they often don’t even realize.
Ruining what? The abuse and murder of sentient beings?
That doesn’t make any sense.
You are quite literally saying “I, as a vegan, have never met one who did that.”
And you don’t understand how the comic applies to you too, like OP is saying?
No I‘ve neither said nor implied that I’m vegan.
Lazy op, nothing credit to the original artist.

He has an amazing Pokemon parody series.

😘
I use Mint, by the way.
Glad that you have a good smelling breath. Some people are allergic to it.
Oh an amateur I see. I use arch btw.
To be fair, I never experienced some linux user talking about it randomly. On the other hand, ai users are so annoying! Every time they’re around, they’re asking whether we saw the latest model, which one we like the most (assuming we use, as if it was a rule, and getting shocked or skeptical if we say we don’t), and stuff like that
i use arch btw
The hardest thing about hating AI isn’t that they’re sycophants, nor that they enable any old dim-wit to pretend to understand any old subject. It’s organically bringing up how much they suck in every conversation. I should know, I hate 'em
It was back then, before elitist Linux users were either forced out, as those also treated Linux not as an OS, but as a special clubhouse. Many of them went back to Windows of all things.
Well, it’s not exactly brain surgery. And I should know.
brain surgery, eh? Not exactly rocket science.
I will always love how, in the end, Mitchell deliberately takes a sip of bubbly before saying the most obvious punchline ever and it’s still one of the best sketches I’ve ever seen.
They’ve had such a cultural impact haha. From ‘are we the baddies’ to numberwang to hennimore to ‘please remain indoors’. It was such a talented writing group when you look on Wikipedia
was
New material is out: “Mitchell & Webb are not helping”, series one was quite good imho - a typical combination of over-the-top silliness and humoristic genius.
I did watch it and enjoyed it, but felt it wasn’t quite as good as that Mitchell and Webb look. Certain sketches (e.g. sweary Aussie drama) felt like the same joke repeated, rather than variations on a theme as for e.g. remain indoors, and the pacing didn’t feel quite as snappy. Felt like the ideas — a lot of which landed well — were being stretched a bit further than the original series.
Not to knock it too much, as there was a lot there that I did like, just not quite on the same level for me personally.
A (radio) series I did really enjoy from writers on that earlier series is John Finnemore’s Souvenir programme (esp. the first few series, but I also really loved series 9 even if it wasn’t a traditional sketch format). Def worth a listen.
sweary Aussie drama
I fast forwarded these. I also didn’t like the airport security stuff.
But I like how e.g. they pun on their own age when having these team talks about their programme. Some bits in that section are really timely, and not just because they mention social media. Like one of the younger upstarts being uncomfortable because they aren’t sure if what they just said was transphobic or not. That sort of stuff.
Ironically, the people who talk about Linux and veganism at inappropriate times the most are folks making this exact joke.
I don’t know, I never mind if people bring up things they’re trying or into.
I love when people share their interests and hobbies with me.
OP’s interest is racism.
So, like Pokemon roleplay and TTRPG’s?
Sure but there is a difference between talking about something you find exciting, and “humblebragging”
This person literally asked about marathons though
I’m not sure I’ve ever heard anyone bring up Linux or marathons like this, and I’ve only ever known one vegan who would. I’m speaking about IRL conversations. Even when I think back to social media posts, these things are somewhat rare still. But sure, be mad about people’s passions I guess?
If a vegan does crossfit, what do they talk about first?
(Replace any part of this joke with the list above)
We talk about Linux first. Then calisthenics, then vegan.
First talk about the overweight, weak carnists posting memes crying about people being healthy and productive.
I ran two half-marathons, does that mean I can say that I technically ran a marathon?
At this point, I think we should officially declare that Arch isn’t Linux. To prevent kids from defaming the overall Linux image.
omg, i just came here to comment that btw i use arch, now i feel lefted out x)
I thought the saying goes ‘all Arch distros are Linux, but not all Linux OSs are Arch’
How them nips doin

Ha
if someone is banned from the community why does their post stay up or did they get banned for saying the n word and not the post?
Ok, so if they made good posts, but they did something bad and got banned.
Are we supposed to just un-person them? Pretend they didn’t exist? What if they made actually useful posts?
Seems dumb to me.
A ban isn’t “un-personing” someone, it’s a temporary restriction on their engagement with one particular community, as a consequence for bad behavior. If that restriction doesn’t actually happen though, it doesn’t seem like a very effective consequence.
Either way, best to just follow the community rules, blend in, occasionally say what you need to, and never get too comfortable or used to any one community, or human comodity.
Wow you’re telling me that a lazy, microsoft bootlicking, carnist is also a racist? I’m shocked.
