Thank you for the more detailed explanation of use and practice. That does help! Gives a little more piece of mind too.

Gotcha. OK so maybe a little less applicable to some more than others.
I already use mostly unique passwords (like a random root word(s) with varying numbers and special characters mixed in) for accounts, and only have my mfa app allowed, not email or SMS. My PW & MFA apps have unique PINs. I also have multiple email aliases for those varying accounts and rotate through after they’re sold every so often. Helps cut down on spam A LOT vs manually unsubscribing. Retail sites are especially guilty of selling info IMO.
Mine might be slightly overkill, and maybe less necessary with passkeys, but I’ll wait until there are goods self-hosted apps for that.
How is passkey better than PW + MFA? Serious question. Everywhere I read online tells me “it’s better” but doesn’t get into the nitty gritty. Also, I don’t use biometrics of face scans on any device.
Edit: I should add, doesn’t this make online less anonymous/private? Once a site or browser is uniquely identified, couldn’t that be used for better fingerprinting across other sites, hindering anonymity? I feel like data is still going to be extracted or gathered.
Aren’t they also stored via cookies? What if your authenticated session is stolen via cookies, what then?

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•If you could take back one thing you've said, what would that be?
2·9 hours agoI’m only replying to the first part… There’s a lifetime of guidance that can be provided, as patents, you usually have only their best interests in mind and want them to learn from your mistakes. My dad is older now and still I listen to his advice or model a lot of what I do based off his success (or failures). My son is grown and I hope he does the same for me. I hope to always be a role model in that sense. As guys we don’t always talk about feelings or deep personal stuff, but if I can non-verbally help him out, I’ll do what I can to be that person!

2·10 hours agoFishing doesn’t have a learning curve. It’s not learn as you go. Nobody in my family fishes but I’ve gone and sorry of slowly figured it out. I’m not super into it, my kids are more curious than anything so I’ve sort of just based what I’ve done off a few movies lol. Were just doing it in rivers and ponds though, nothing crazy. Catch and release while camping.

1·3 days agoNot everyone wants to live in a densely populated area though, so not just cities. Many are stuck distance traveling for jobs that could be done remotely, too, with no real means of public transportation. Sure, it exists, but too many variables for too many people so its not convenient.
So many city-based people don’t understand how the rest of the country functions… Very close/narrow-minded to just assume everyone else should be able to adjust/adapt their lives to what works for them.

How would this app be an improvement or any better? Sometimes I feel people clone app repos, tweak 1 or 2 things and call it a whole new app.

2·9 days agoOutlook gives you aliases, but obviously we’re not trying to use big bro tech.
Proton paid does this as does free with limited aliases.
Then there’s SimpleLogin (also through Proton) that gives you a bunch of domains to use with several other domains. The only service that rejected the alias domain was Github, but it’s trash and owned by MS so nbd.

7·10 days agoConsoles are typically loss leaders. They make money on the games, accessories, etc. If Microsoft dropped exclusives, it means more money making games with less money losing consoles… It’s purely a business profitability move, not a gamer move.
Sony probably realized people would much prefer Steam and PC overPS and saw a drop in console sales which hurt game sales. So they’re back tracking to exclusives to being back money.
See Microsoft is software where Sony is hardware. That’s why Xbox is dying. Like Sega. Just focused on software and IPs…

OK, thank you.
