What Could Go Wrong@lemm.ee•Let's drive over a rickety bridge when the river is too high
4·3 years agoI wouldn’t be caught driving on that bridge if it was over a bone dry riverbed.
It looks like the classic rickety rope bridge trope

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•People on Mastodon...are there a lot of users who just spam stars and boosts like mad to get followers? Some posts seem to get a ton of instant, rapid interaction even though I only have 13 followers
91·3 years agoMastodon really runs on direct post engagement, especially boosts, to make the whole thing work without an algorithm
It’s very similar to tumblr in that a boost is supposed to function like a like/upvote to spread content, since no automated algorithm is going to suggest that post for you.
But I’m sure people are also trying to grow their networks quick, since it’s sort of a hollow experience without it

News@lemmy.world•Musk threatens to sue researchers who documented the rise in hateful tweets
2·3 years agoThat may be true for the biggest and most far-reaching things he does, but we don’t need to know every daily controversy with changing the signage on a San Francisco building. It’s overload.
Every tweet he puts out with an ignorant opinion is probably not newsworthy enough to be disseminated widely; that’s actually exactly what he would want to happen.
Even dropping from 4 major Musk related outrage stories a day to a couple a week would be a much healthier discourse, without stamping out any important information like your concerned about.

81·3 years agoIt feels like the Streisand effect is negatively impacting me/everyone else in this instance
I despise the guy, but I’m tired of hearing about every stupid exploit. He’s so fabulously rich that no negative publicity can really cause reprecussions, I feel like it now just keeps him constantly in the public eye a la Trump circa 2016

Technology@lemmy.world•Threads Continues to Copy Twitter's Worst Elements With New Rate LimitsEnglish
141·3 years agoSalix is right that it alludes to the Dead Internet Theory.
I don’t actually subscribe to the full theory that the internet is already dead and we only talk to bots, but I do think bot activity may become advanced and pervasive enough to create a “Dead Internet” like scenario (or at least fundamentally alter platforms away from what we currently know as the internet experience)
