You Should Know@lemmy.world•YSK that Stanford scientists recently examined what happens when people stop using social media. They found deactivating Facebook and Instagram improved users' emotional well-being and happinessEnglish
58·1 day agoCan attest. Dropped Facebook in like 2016 and am not on anything else aside from Lemmy. I constantly felt like I wasn’t measuring up to people’s perfect family pictures and exciting vacations, even though I knew intellectually that their pictures were posed and their lives were edited for social media. The world still sucks but at least I feel less inadequate.

4·8 days agoAw, it’s been a while, but I read it as a kid and then later as an adult and I felt it held up pretty well.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Do people actually call their parents by their name (as in First-name basis)? Have you ever done that? Or witnessed someone doing that?English
3·13 days agoMy brother does it to my mom specifically in crowds. He picked it as a scout during crowded meetings and it stuck. He’s in his 30s now.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•None of this "what are you thankful for" shit today. What's something you hate? English
50·20 days agoMy husband has set up a pihole and it’s the best ever. It used to run off an actual raspberry pi but now we have a home server and he got it set up on there. Literally yesterday he also added Tailscale to our computers and phones and it seriously rocks my socks. I don’t even exactly know what it does but suddenly I’m not getting any ads while at my in-laws house on their WiFi so, score! I am not tech savvy enough to know about these things, much less set them up myself, but I am super thankful that my husband aggressively hates ads and I get to benefit from his crusade against them.

Lemmy Shitpost@lemmy.world•Feeding my family alone is expensive. I can't afford to feed all of y'all.English
15·20 days agoMy aunt always hosted but we always brought something to share, usually something that was precooked or didn’t need cooking, like salad or dessert or even just cheese and crackers for an appetizer or something. She still made a ton of food but she didn’t have to do it all on her own, and we all drove a bit to get there; we were the furthest I think at about 2.5 hours away. It was my favorite holiday; just food and family. But I am aware that my family is pretty functional as families go. I am very lucky.

Books@lemmy.world•What book(s) are you currently reading or listening to? November 25English
3·20 days agoI’m enjoying it! I keep having to remind myself that the characters are pretty young because sometimes I picture them older and then they go and do something completely stupid (Kaladin, I’m looking at you right now) but it makes sense if you remember that they are either teenagers or just barely not teens.
I’m a cheapskate so I’m making do with Libby and occasionally also my actual library. If I really like a book, then I’ll consider purchasing a physical copy. I actually prefer reading physical books over audio, but I have so little time and so many other things I want to do that I had basically stopped reading entirely for a long time, and I was frustrated by that. About a year ago I decided that I was just going to force myself to make audiobooks work because I spend a lot of time in the car. Sometimes there isn’t an audio version, so I’ll check out the ebook version from Libby and have it on my phone, and it’s a really nice alternative to doomscrolling when I’m waiting in line or at the doctor’s office or something.

9·21 days agoStill listening to Words of Radiance… it’s so long! Thanksgiving travel is providing several hours worth of listening time and I’m still only 3/5ths through it. My Libby loan is gonna run out on Sunday and I’m honestly not sure I’m gonna make it. I have and read a physical copy of The Way of Kings and while I rather like the narrators now that I’m used to them, I’m wondering if I’m just gonna have to continue with physical copies because I don’t do Audible and I can’t manage to get through a whole book in the three weeks or whatever that Libby gives me.

1·1 month agoI’m a sucker for blue; 9 might be my favorite. 6 was yet more brown in a house full of brown and yellow. I’m an early 80s baby but my parents held on to the 70s as hard as they could, decor-wise.

If you’d like a recipe, this one is one of our favorites and my husband typically doesn’t like veggies at all. He loves it. (Please ignore that it comes from a meal kit service; this one doesn’t even use any custom spice blends so it’s easy to do on your own. We tried the kit thing slightly before and during COVID but have long since discontinued it.)

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•Vacations don't fix your life because your brain treats time off like a free trial of being the person you want to beEnglish
7·1 month agoMy friend describes this as vacation people vs trip people. My husband and I are definitely trip people generally, but with kids in the picture it’s nice to get an actual vacation (relaxing) in once in a while. But there’s so much in the world we want to see!

6·1 month agoJust started listening to Words of Radiance. I’m not the biggest Sanderson fan but I think he’s okay and I understand why people like his stuff. It does feel a little bloated though. I’m interested to find out if I’ll fall in love with Dalinar like everyone else seems to have.
