Privacy@lemmy.ml•How can I avoid proprietary software on school & company computers?
3·2 days agoI have run into this issue of needing Microslop for school. I’m allowed to use my own hardware if I install their spyware. So I have two setups:
Portable: Win10 on an old lenovo laptop that just runs their tracking software. I can access the sharepoint, outlook and teams with LibreWolf on that machine, if I must.
When at home I have a virtual machine that also runs Win10 for their spyware. I use LibreWolf on fedora for the sharepoint, outlook and teams.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's the greatest break up song in your opinion?
3·4 days agoBreak Up (Bye Bye) by the Frock Destroyers
Yes, literally translated it does. Maul is a bit on the vulgar side these days, you’d say Mund instead. For animals often Maul is still used. And if you tell someone to shut up you tell them Halt’s Maul (hold your mouth)

Privacy@lemmy.ml•Should I go for GrapheneOS, e/os or LIneageOS on a new phone? (see description)
121·7 days agoI love Graphene, because I seriously care about privacy. Everything works well but I also wasn’t a fan of having to find Google hardware. Second hand worked and next year I will consider the Motorola that will run Graphene.
Since you insist on Meta and Google Apps, you seem less concerned with hard privacy, so a Fairphone with e/OS could be a great choice. e/OS is nice too, I tried it for a while but found some laps in it’s privacy settings and I did not want to leak any location info to google.
If you don’t like it, you can revert to stock android, no problem.

1·12 days agoThanks, this is good to know. I’m in the process of upgrading my media setup and am playing around with Jellyfin to replace Plex. I’ve been reluctant to commit since Plex is easy and I have a lifetime pass, but this data collection is a great reason to finally be done with Plex

World News@lemmy.world•Uproar in Germany over law requiring men get military approval for long stays abroadEnglish
5·21 days agoNot quite, this particular paragraph was identical in the cold war era but the other paragraphs, mainly defining when it is in effect and when not, were changed. This made the law applicable since January 1st of this year. So previously this rule was only applicable during war or “conflicting times” and now it always is.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Is Switzerland expensive for American travelers?
10·1 month agoEating out is expensive, I would recommend at least Fr.150 per person per day for food. That should cover 2-3 meals and a coffee, sweet treat, etc.
In Europe it’s normal that supermarket prices are significantly cheaper than restaurants. The people preparing our food deserve a living wage.
Sure there will be some fancy ski hut waiting for someone rich or drunk enough to shell out 100k for booze, but just because it exists doesn’t mean it’s the norm.

I started doing this again. I leave my phone at home and just go out with a bit of cash in my pocket. I bought an mp3 player so I can bring along some music.
