102·15 hours agoI build my own TV stack to replace my NVidia Shield. It’s way better… has a kick ass weather app with radar and wind lines. I can push notifications from any home assist or integrate with any api… integrates with Jellyfin… a photo sharing app I built… youtube is awesome. Super snappy. I gave one to my 80 year old Dad and it’s now his d daily driver. The only thing I cant do is get streaming 4k from Apple and HBOMax due to their drm.

424·16 hours agoI’m building my own email server. It receives mail, checks it for spam and forgery, stores it securely, lets apps read it, and sends outgoing mail. It handles a lot of domains on one system, with nothing important tied to a single machine, so parts can fail or restart without losing anything. It’s written in Rust… for safety, and I’m using AI heavily to write and test the code. It’s big, mostly because email has decades of standards and quirks, and every mail client has to work with it.

Games@lemmy.world•'None of these people have ever made a game,' BioWare co-founder Greg Zeschuk says of game industry executives: 'They just don't know how it works'
68·5 days agoZeschuk nails it, and it lines up with something Nate Hagens talked about on The Great Simplification: a company doesn’t need a single villain at the top to behave like a psychopath, it just needs to be structured so that extraction beats CRAFT every time. That’s what “none of these people have ever made a game” feels like to me. BioWare was built on people who loved the work and took the time it needed; the PIF/private-equity model wants annual sports titles and predictable margins. Hagens’ talks about traits out-competing values, so the people with the values (Zeschuk) walk away from the crucible and the people with the extraction reflex keep hammering forward. We ALL have this SAME problem people… wtf are we going to do about it is the question.

News@lemmy.world•More Than 800,000 U.S. Job Gains Have Been Revised Away — the Labor Market Is Much Weaker Than Originally Thought
1·6 days agoYou’re right about the dual mandate, that’s the traditional mechanism: weak jobs, rate cuts, stocks up. And that plays right into what Trump wants anyway. Bad job numbers give the Fed cover to cut, which is exactly what he’s been demanding. But I think the mandate is being overpowered now. Trump wants rates at 1% or lower. He’s a real estate guy who built his career on cheap debt, and he’s openly said the oil industry is “making a freaking fortune” off high gas prices and “I don’t give a damn.” That tells you whose interests come first. Cheap money flows into assets, and the hottest asset right now is AI, controlled by a handful of tech billionaires who lined up behind this administration. When jobs disappear, their investors read it as proof AI is working, and stocks climb. The market isn’t following the Fed’s mandate anymore, it’s following capital’s story… So in my view, the people outwardly pulling the strings are the asset owners: oil, tech, real estate, and the administration serving them. Bad news for workers is good news for them. That’s what I mean by psychos. Okay, get your tinfoil hat? This next part is pure speculation, but what if… What if pressuring the Fed isn’t just about donors, but part of something bigger? Trump calls Canada the 51st state, wants Greenland, and talks about owning the Western Hemisphere. His envoys are real estate and investment guys holding repeated meetings with Putin about joint business deals, while he waives Russian sanctions. My theory… there’s been a kind of modern Yalta, where the big strongmen quietly carve the world into spheres. The Fed is one of the last independent institutions standing in the way, so it has to be bent. Cheap money pumps up the assets the ruling circle owns. The Iran war drives up oil, which enriches Russia and US oil, hurts Europe, and squeezes ordinary Americans. A squeezed, destabilized population is easier to push around. Every piece of the pattern is there for this… and the people winning is pretty clear.
