Banning third party apps was the symptom. The root cause was Reddit going public. The lust for cash ruined Reddit for a lot of people.

Linux Gaming@lemmy.world•Resurrecting an old desktop—is it worth upgrading?English
2·6 months agoI just upgraded a Linux box I build in 2018. It had a Ryzen 5 1600 and 16gb DDR4. Previously I’d replaced the video card with a Radeon 580. But with that config it sucked at video games, pretty much unplayable. Replaced the CPU with a Ryzen 9 5900 and slightly faster 32GB DDR4 and now all of a sudden it plays older games great. Probably the most challenging game I’ve tried is Doom from 2016 or whenever which isn’t much to brag about but the CPU upgrade made a huge difference. The video card and CPU was about $450. Definitely worth the money. It feels like a totally different computer.
As a side note, I’m generally not a big fan of generative AI but it was helpful in deciding the upgrades. In particular it pointed out that to upgrade the CPU I needed to update my motherboard BIOS. Double check everything for sure but it provided solid suggestions.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Lemmings over 30 who try to stay active, what are you doing to accommodate for your incredibly decrepit bodies to avoid boo-boos?
11·8 months agoWhen I was that age my main exercise was commuting by running or biking. I got additional sporadic exercise doing miscellaneous sports. Having kids made it very hard to do more than that. I’m not working now and have the time and energy to do much broader and consistent exercise.
Turning your commute into your exercise regimen is great. Be warned though that the human body is great at optimizing and will quickly adapt to that specific routine. When you vary off that routine you’ll find you’re not in as great of shape as you thought. But you’ll be miles ahead from where you’d be otherwise.

Books@lemmy.world•What book(s) are you currently reading or listening to? August 26
7·10 months agoHyperion by Dan Simmons. A very imaginative book. Which could be considered a backhanded compliment. I dont think he always gets it right but on the balance it’s an engaging read. Best of all its a trilogy so more books to go. Hopefully the quality keeps up.

A Boring Dystopia@lemmy.world•Four NYPD officers converged on one woman on a bike because she smiled at them, then detained her because she wasn't carrying ID.
14·1 year agoYes, I heard that but I think that there is almost always somewhere to move. My guess is that the police thought she didn’t make that effort. Probably the police didn’t make it very clear what they wanted before the escalated.

A Boring Dystopia@lemmy.world•Four NYPD officers converged on one woman on a bike because she smiled at them, then detained her because she wasn't carrying ID.
28·1 year agoI’m a little confused. Lots of words before it seems like she was pulled over because she didn’t get out of the way of the police when they put their sirens on. Impossible to know whether she made a mistake or not. Still probably a massive overreaction by the police. Obviously traumatic for the young woman but her narrative seems melodramatic. Yes, you’re in the bike lane but you can still move over. It does seem dystopia that you can be arrested for not having ID for such a small offense.
I set it up a while ago and don’t have a good resource for setting it up now. Once I got it set up it has worked well. But like I said it seems fragile. When I upgraded fedora a couple of years ago it broke. I think it might have been the wayland transition. I switched from Nvidia to AMD. But I’m not sure that’s necessary. My wife and I have two workstations on one computer. It works well until it breaks (if you want to live with end of life software it may not break). For whatever reason multiseat doesn’t seem to be a mainstream feature. But I like it and have been using it for many years.

Loginctl is the tool you use to assign hardware to different seats. Also I’m not sure every login manager supports it. I used GDM.
The open source community feels like the ultimate right to repair environment. You’re right, it feels very empowering and fulfilling. Totally opposite of the frustration of dealing with often intentionally unrepairable products.

Technology@lemmy.world•'Writing is on the wall for spinning rust': IBM joins Pure Storage in claiming disk drives will go the way of the dodo in enterprisesEnglish
181·1 year agoMy sample size of myself has had 1 drive fail in decades. It was a solid state drive. Thankfully it failed in a strangely intermittent way and I was able to recover the data. But still, it surprised me as one would assume solid state would be more reliable. That spinning rust has proven to be very reliable. But regardless I’m sure SSD will be/are better in every way.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•How old do you think is the oldest lemmy user?
5·2 years agoDoes Lemmy support polls? Seems like this would be a good poll.
My LG microwave suffered a major malfunction and broke the magnetron. I replace it but the humidity sensor apparently broke also so my popcorn button and with other features dependant on that sensor don’t work.
Just another example of the enshitification of consumer products. Now I have to cook my popcorn like a savage. I don’t know how many bags of popcorn I ruined because my attention span is shorter than the 1-2 seconds between pops.

News@lemmy.world•Video showing “Haitian immigrants” illegally voting was faked by Russian disinformation unit, US says
23·2 years agoHow does a video of Haitian immigrants voting illegally versus legally look different? Are they wearing signs or maybe one of those “Hi! My name is…” stickers with “Illegally Voting Haitian Immigrant” written in? Or maybe it’s just obvious because they present passports written on the back of cereal boxes and the election worker is giving big comic winks and saying “sign here US citizen legally allowed to vote.” I guess it doesn’t matter what the video shows. It’s probably some Bigfoot jerky video with garbled audio with a caption saying “Haitian immigrants voting illegally.”

World News@lemmy.world•Germany gets top marks for integration of migrantsEnglish
101·2 years agoAs always it’s important to get the thoughts of sports or movie stars before making any judgements.
According to German soccer star Toni Kroos, Germany is worse off which doesn’t seem like a metric of success.
He said he felt that Germany had become less secure since he left, and was now concerned his child would not come back “unharmed” from a night out alone.
Kroos told the Lanz & Precht podcast: “I think Germany is a great country and I’m happy to be here, but it’s not really the same country that it was 10 years ago when we left.”
But of course he hasn’t lived there for 10 years so who knows what he’s basing this on.
