There’s a few obvious ones but my best life hack, as a dude, is regarding shaving razors and cream. Those Gillette things in the UK are damn expensive. They got like 4 razors, super fancy. And the cream too. You don’t need it. I bought a massive bag of the classic razors off of Ebay and moved to the classic shaving soap. Lasts me months.

Linux@lemmy.ml•I have used Windows all my life, and I have some questions.
21·11 months agoOn the GPU thing. NVIDIA: apparently stable but need to do some work to install. I don’t have nvidia though
AMD: don’t need to do anything.
And also, you are highly unlikely to damage your hardware through misconfiguration. Imagine if it was easy to do that, I doubt Linux would be used for servers powering the Internet and phones around the world if that were the case

Linux@lemmy.ml•I have used Windows all my life, and I have some questions.
3·11 months agoA lot of great questions. I think many details are already out there but I’ll try to answer some to my best ability.
Answering the easier questions: Most games work check protondb.com for your specific games. There is a “Linux update” button on some popular mainstream linux distros - and it will never force you! Its also possible to update without rebooting for most updates (how great right?) No antivirus needed and it’s more secure (but of course not invulnerable!)
Some of the other questions have a “It depends…up until a point” answers.
There are work arounds for non Linux programs…except for specific examples like some games. Valorant for example.
I’m not a modder or .NET expert but there’s something called Wine which should help with that …so answer is probably Yes-with caveats.
I’d recommend thinking about what are you “must work” deal breakers for work/hobbies (more specific than these more general questions) and considering if linux is for you. The distros that might work for you are Pop OS! and Linux Mint.
The neat thing is you can try these for free and hop around. I dual booted windows and Linux for a while before making the full time switch.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What are some places in Europe with a low price level and worth traveling to?
12·11 months agoEastern Europe tends to be cheaper but you can travel on a budget in most places.
Never heard of fees to enter a city before apart from the ETIAS fee for some countries which is somewhat like the ESTA but cheaper I think.

linuxmemes@lemmy.world•In fact what you call Linux is actually God/Linux or how I like to call it God+Linux. Do you want to share the software in the name of Jesus Christ?

Privacy@lemmy.ml•Be mindful of VPNs as then are once again not a silver bullet
11·3 years agoSemi related but there has been so much anti VPN stuff of late on the web. I blame the big vpn providers for their miss marketing and poor ads from sponsoring deals. The repercussions are making it out like vpns are not useful. Noone thought they were silver bullet before. now they are made out to be a waste of money? All the “you don’t need a VPN” stuff needs to stop. Im concerned people are gonna stop caring about anonymity and enhancing privacy with VPN.
If you want a VPN I would recommended Mullvad and pay with with Crypto
Some more info and helpful blogs from mullvad https://mullvad.net/en/help/all-about-dns-servers-and-privacy/
You can use quad9 or mullvad DNS resolvers for free to prevent DNS leaks

Linux Gaming@lemmy.world•Garuda Linux for desktop & gamingEnglish
2·3 years agoWelcome to Garuda. First change the icons if you don’t like them.
I would just look around and read about Garuda. Not much else tbh. It just works
It’s okay, Rishi will make sure they’re alright 😃
How do you do this on ddg app?
On your phone…? How
This is probably what happened. If you use Google, YouTube and Chrome and esp if you are logged into ur Google account those don’t matter too much…
The discord vc isn’t private but listening to a conversation in real time and picking out key points, who said what and then translating that to recommendations seems a challenge but not impossible. A speech model could do this but that would be quite insane. It seems more likely that the recommendation was based of off previous searches and predicted correctly.
If Dc was listening like that I would expect to see some weird shit cos I talk random stuff in dc voice
None atm. DNS over HTTPS cos im poor using mullvad’s DNS server instead of VPN . Makes it bit more difficult for my ISP

Thanks. I’ll use this as an excuse to fart on the beach: “No, it’s the parrotfish poo”
