Where did you get my claims about Ubuntu from? I didn’t write a word about Canonical bro.

Fedora is indeed mostly backed by a for-profit company, always was. Not sure about the rest of the rant, I’m gonna assume you are right.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Why You Should Self-Host EverythingEnglish
17·2 years agoI do self-host some services but it bugs me that a lot of articles that talk about costs do not factor in a lot of additional costs. Drives for NAS need replacement. Running NUCs means quite an energy draw compared to most ARM based SBCs.

9·2 years agoSadly, it seems Meta made some good decisions in LLM area at least. Llama is a de facto base of most good 7b and 13b LLMs, the ones that have potential on running on low grade hardware.

24·2 years agoSadly, this. Average consumer, and I don’t mean it as an insult, will not look for an alternative to streaming. All these giant streaming companies are gauging how far they can go to increase the profit margins.

Technology@lemmy.world•Researcher has developed, at a cost of less than one dollar, a wireless light switch that runs without batteries, can be installed anywhere on a wall and could reduce the cost of wiring a house by ...English
31·2 years agoThe conclusion of the research is that solution energy efficient and cheaper. Smart bulbs are nice, but they solve neither of the issues mentioned. They need to be powered on all the time and you still need the switches either way, unless you design your home to be solely smartphone controlled but nobody does that.

Technology@lemmy.world•A Spanish agency became so sick of models and influencers that they created their own with AI — and she’s raking in up to $11,000 a monthEnglish
1·2 years agoQuite frankly it still leaves the effect. Same goes for dark photos - that’s actually even worse. Trying to create a picture of dark wooded area always results with some sort of weird lighting be it moon or whatever fake source it generates - and yea, that’s already with “darkening” Loras and negative embeddings. If you mean photography-related lighting terms then even with that I find the lighting unnatural.

221·2 years agoLooks like a typical Stable Diffusion model. All of them have the same problem - lighting. It’s always with that bad front facing “flash” effect.

12·2 years agoDid you? It says that it at one point MIGHT be useful to chimerize the monkeys to research neurodegenrative diseases. Making it glowing was just to make shit easier for them, not for any scientific purposes.
And yeah, I get it, scientific breakthrough comes with a cost, but there’s reason why primates are not generally getting chimerized…

1·3 years agoAlso sure, let’s judge male white CEOs on merit. Let’s start with Elon Musk…
Also I can’t understand why there are people here assuming that the only way to “focus on having less white male CEOs” == eliminating them. This shit is done organically. Eliminating wage gap, providing equal opportunities in education etc.

21·3 years agoHow did you get from what I wrote to “tearing down” anyone is a bit puzzling. It’s simply about striving to change the status quo and not the AI model representing it. I’m not advocating guillotining Bezos or Musk, hope that’s clear.

1013·3 years agoMeanwhile every trained model on Civit.ai produces 12/10 Asian women…
Joking aside, what you feed the model is what you get. Model is trained. You train it on white people, it’s going to create white people, you train it on big titty anime girls it’s not going to produce WWII images either.
Then there’s a study cited that claims Dall-e has a bias when producing images of CEO or director as cis-white males. Think of CEOs that you know. Better yet, google them. It’s shit but it’s the world we live in. I think the focus should be on not having so many white privileged people in the real world, not telling AI to discard the data.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Does anyone actually like the default GNOME workflow?
2·3 years agoI prefer GNOME to KDE and I understand that there’s research and philosophy behind some of the decisions, but I just can’t get around some of the quirks. “Workflow” itself is fine, with tiling on top, you can get by. But those window decorations. So much space is taken by a completely useless, fat bar at the top of each window even though it’s not really aimed at being touchscreen native.

Not only you. I had the same impression, especially in FMV parts.
