Doesn’t have the nostalgia, but I enjoyed “How to Live Safely in a Science Fictional Universe” by Charles Yu in the same general zone as Ready Player One. It’s playful yet dips toes into the serious or heartfelt at times. About a time mechanic who lives in his time machine with his dog, employed to traverse time and fix time machines of others.

Games@lemmy.world•What personal dramas have you witnessed with/among your fellow players while gaming?English
22·2 个月前Once upon a time I ran a clan in a popular PvE/PvP co-op FPS alien shooter (still going, but has lost its magic). We had a few kinda well-known actors in the group. Shooting aliens one day and bullshitting with one when he gets a call that his best friend and fellow actor/writer OD’ed last night. He didn’t leave, and there wasn’t anything I could say. We shot aliens in silence for quite a while.

3·2 个月前I read 7 minutes, but nonetheless, I just found that recording odd. If you were a tourist there with your phone, you’d be recording the guy you assume to be doing maintenance on a case? I’m not suggesting some plot or conspiracy theory or batshit stuff like that. They stole the stuff and got away with it. I just found that video odd. Regardless, we weren’t there and can’t know all the ins and outs.

21·2 个月前True, but that still begs the question, why were they filming that person if they didn’t think something was going on? Not that I’d expect a bystander to throw themselves upon a thief, but interesting they still got away after being noticed and filmed during.

141·4 个月前As great as the improvements have been, I’ve still not seen an alternative that can compete with gas when it comes to tilting a pan or wok. Losing heat every time you lose direct, flat contact is so frustrating for certain cooking styles. Also being able to roast (and not fully bake) a pepper over the flames is so helpful. If an alternative could do those two things, I’d be very excited.

Science Fiction@lemmy.world•What SF books did you enjoy the most in 2024?
15·1 年前To Sleep In A Sea Of Stars - one of the most action-packed books I’ve read, even with a few lengthy “hibernation” space travel sections. Felt like an entire trilogy happening in a single book. Seems prime for a movie treatment, but would also be next to impossible to do in a single movie without completely butchering.
