Selfhosted@lemmy.world•That's all folks, Plex is starting to charge for sharingEnglish
122·10 months agoI’m done with Plex - They won’t get my recommendations. My holdoff buying PlexPass were the little bugs that always mattered - Pausing for more than a few minutes HARD locked up the stream, the stream had to re-init to load subtitles, and then the MAJOR issue with “What files is Plex NOT seeing” and other indexing issues. I paid for my Android app, happily. But now, telling me I can’t stream my own media, after paying for the app? Y’all can F right off with that. I’ll be finally setting up Jellyfin ASAP.
But compared with human eyesight, they could still see more ‘colors’ - As we see (almost) the same white in incandescent bulbs as LEDs and fluorescents, they might actually see the component colors and their intensities.
Not unlike how we may hear a combination tone when multiple other tones are played, and hear the difference (or sum) of them.

World News@lemmy.world•Couple forced to sit next to dead body on plane for 4 hours after woman dies mid-flightEnglish
4·1 year agoI lost the first car I’d purchased outright to a "dead behind the wheel’ driver, and I wasn’t even in it!
A friend had borrowed the car, just a couple weeks after buying it, and was stopped at an intersection - An older man had a heart attack, barreled through the intersection, hit a pole, and then kept turning and t-boned my friend in my car. No injuries (other than the dead guy) but my car was totaled. Insurance payout was super!

The opening scene to Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation gives me work anxiety, with the Jeremy Renner as the manager who is shouting at the two people doing the work to work faster (repeatedly) and giving them directions but has no understanding of what they are doing. Then Cruise sweeps in with a new directive and it takes a few tries to get right, under an absurd deadline.
Speak for yourself. I try not to think.

1·1 year agoAnd it’s opposite (Schrödinger’s Box?) - The (edge) problem that you can see and is guaranteed to exist and cause problems but somehow never does and the code works perfectly.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•As a passenger in the car, whats the things a driver does that pisses you off, makes you uncomfortable, or terrifies you?
8·1 year agoMy former boss’s wife used to steer very strangely when driving - The Jeep was likely out of alignment, but instead of staying centered and making continuous small corrections, she’d let it drift to one side till it was on the line then quickly correct back towards center and then continue drifting, endlessly until arriving at the destination.

31·1 year agoLeftist with lofty goals still have to settle - This is the real world, and far from an idealized utopia. We can step into the light while still recognizing we’re walking in the shade. Pro-rehabilitation folks still can believe that not all people can be rehabilitated. Capital punishment may sometimes be the only fitting remedy for civilization, if not just for the punished. There will always be evil in the world who aren’t capable of rehabilitation without some form of violence and punishment - Some crimes and criminals are beyond what the sane and just can fathom.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•If "Master/Slave" terminology in computing sounds bad now, why not change it to "Dom/Sub"?
71·1 year agoThat’s where you should use something more like top / bottom /s
I think in this sense, master is more akin to the ‘recording’ master - The best version of the recording to which others are generated, and all parts merged; no ‘slaves’ necessarily just the ‘master’.
You clearly haven’t seen how bad “no-consequences cheap” can be with even simple electronics. Your lamp, for example:
Melting (under-spec or poor construction) AC wiring, poor material for the cord, switch or socket.
Melting / burning lampshade (yes, even with LEDs).
Electrocution risk - Loose connections, easily broken plug or lamp socket, switch, inappropriate (conductive) materials.**
And that’s not even considering larger-design problems - Lamps that are prone to falling over (and breaking, or melting other things), lamps that flex but not too much or they break exposing problems above, assemblies that aren’t reasonably child-proof, RF interference even.
The race to the bottom without rules is a dangerous place for the consumer expecting a bare minimum guarantee of fitness while inviting these products into their home, not to mention those most often buying the cheapest option may be the most vulnerable.

4·2 years agoThere’s some really fun chemistry in the rare-earth magnets - I used to buy them in bulk to enlarge my own IT-workshop collection, which was mostly broken down for Nd salts. Also, the magnets from iMac screens were also plentiful when HDD magnets got small (and then went extinct).
I do kinda like saying “the actual issue was a PICNIC.”

We have a similar problem in some downtown places here - Investors / rich-folk buy them up for reasons, and then when they are done (or ‘disused’) they sit empty for ever, driving prices up.
I believe I saw a motion (but no action) to tax empty condos at a higher rate than fully-occupied ones.
