Over here, especially in urban areas, it’s expected that your dog doesn’t approach others. Aggressive behaviour doesn’t fly. Aggressive dogs on lead are accepted if the owner has complete control, but anything beyond that isn’t ok.

Mildly Interesting@lemmy.world•An "airport neighbourhood" where people can store their planes in their yard and taxi directly to the runway
1·3 years agoAt the end of my in laws small 8mx8m garden is a freight train line, and honestly, you just don’t hear it anymore once you’re used to it.
A bogus gasman, here to ransack yer hoose.

Privacy Guides@lemmy.one•If you work remotely, your bosses are probably using software to track you. Here's how they'll catch you slacking off.English
7·3 years agoI’ve done this too. Someone who was not outputting the same amount of work as their colleagues, or when they did it was simple stuff with no real innovative features. The bare minimum.
Pulled logs off their machine, and they spent 4 hours on Google maps (they’re also a taxi driver after hours) and messing about on PayPal for another few hours (they also did some consultancy).
There was around 37 minutes of work done that day.
They were no longer burdened with this job which seemed to interfere with their other evening/weekend jobs.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What's a skill that's taken for granted where you live, but is often missing in people moving there from abroad?
11·3 years agoI just use my teeth and it horrifys anyone I’m with…
Jokes on them though, because I’m the one with an open beer.

News@lemmy.world•Texas drunk drivers will now have to pay child support if they kill a parent, guardian
53·3 years agoPeople need to live within their means. It’s not a human right to go get drunk every weekend. If you can’t afford it, you stay home.
I get paid 4 weekly so get 13 pays a year.
Even better if you keep schtoom about it and automate your work from home job allowing you to just chill for most of the day.

Books@lemmy.world•What book(s) are you currently reading? 31 August
2·3 years agoWorking my way through “The Mechanic” by Marc ‘Elvis’ Priestley. So far it’s a pretty nice insight into the ins and outs of an F1 mechanic from a perspective below that of the likes of Newey or Steiner (who’s books are also top tier reading).

14·3 years agoI joined a " we are family" company and got shouted at by the founder because I wasn’t a mind reader and didn’t do something I had no idea needed done.
Sounds exactly like family, except I was hired into the position of toddler.
Fuck that noise.

World News@lemmy.world•Scientist warn 1 billion on track to die from climate change.English
11·3 years agoIn Europe over 60,000 people died in 2022 due to heatwaves.
People are blind to these deaths because they’re not being taken out by a single devastating event, but rather a series of small events the people brush off as “they were going to die anyway”.
It’s one of the reasons I’ve not, and will not have children. This is getting exponentially worse and I couldn’t image the horror that our future will face.
The only benefit to an automatic is being able to eat a burrito while driving.
Still doesn’t outweigh the niceness of driving a manual.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Is there a title (Mr/Ms/Mrs) that is gender neutral?
2·3 years agoI work on websites and have carried out extensive user testing to get the right non-binary honorific, and it ended up being Mx.
Implemented it on every site I’ve worked on now.

News@lemmy.world•More dog owners are questioning vaccines like rabies after COVID
24·3 years agoThe sentiment is different now though around becoming unwell with one of these diseases. They’ll argue they caught it from vaccine shedding rather than naturally so it will just make them even more psychotic on the antivax soapbox.
Andrew Wakefield has a lot to answer for by rocket powering our regression in modern medicine.

News@lemmy.world•Pet owner ‘bill shock’ worsening the mental health crisis among Australian vets, inquiry told
6·3 years agoAs the owner of 3 insured pets, 2 of which need ongoing complicated care, it’s easy to see that vets are overworked and underappreciated.
My local practice was recently taken over by a UK chain and it’s obvious. I asked (before) if supplements were worthwhile, and was told that there was no clinical evidence for them and lifestyle changes were more impactful. After the buy out, I was led to the front where an enormous stand of supplements sat and was urged to consider the very expensive options after a consult that showed the lifestyle choices were having a great impact on quality of life.
It’s a real shame. I got a call later in the evening yesterday with results for my currently unwell cat and I know that vet had been there for 12 hours at that point.
I’ll never grudge the money I spend on them because I’d sell my car before seeing them suffer but I can see how many would become disenfranchised after working in the reality of modern veterinary medicine.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What temperature do you keep your thermostat at?
5·3 years ago18°C in the winter, and off completely in the summer.

I have a lab. She’s 30kg and the textbook “good girl” - a decent depiction of the breed standard.
I got her because her terperment was semi predicted in line with her breed, but I still have public liability insurance and don’t let her approach kids because she’s still a dog.
