  • The way to solve the problem you have is to maintain a receptacle specifically for untrusted interactions. You might try to minimize them but they will eventually become unavoidable like now.

    Back in the day before email it was called a blind box and you’d rent it at the post office.

    In your situation you’d just keep a second phone/number.

    It costs more money, there isn’t a free alternative or do it yourself method.



  • I’m really trying to be super nice here so please give me the benefit of the doubt and read this post in the kindliest voice you can:

    The generation of data transmission standard supported is separate from the band of radio frequencies which are allowed in a given jurisdiction. You can do 4g lte for example over several different swaths of the spectrum with no problem as long as the devices are all talking on the same frequencies.

    Not all phones allow for transmission across all frequencies. This means that a phone could have a radio chipset that’s band limited in such a way that it can’t function in a different country where the electromagnetic spectrum is portioned up differently.

    When I say radio here I’m talking about transmission of data in the range of frequencies used by mobile phone wireless carriers.

    I’m, again, trying to be kind and helpful here: if you haven’t already, it may behove you to directly contact the company you intend to buy a sim from (or purchase an eSIM from) and verify by checking your device’s imei or serial that it is 100% compatible with the radio spectrum used for cellular data transmission in your destination.

    Manufacturers use the same model number with different radio capabilities or even radio chips all the time.



  • The magic remotes work on Linux without an lg tv but require an lg tv if you’re not hooking them to Linux. That means you won’t have the gyroscopic cursor control if the remote is communicating directly with the non lg tv but if it’s communicating directly with your Linux computer then you will have gyroscopic cursor control.

    If you don’t understand that distinction or how to handle it I recommend you don’t bet on having that feature.

    You can’t remove or destroy the mic without taking the remote apart. Often remotes use many mics because it’s cheaper to use four shitty ones and run them into unused dsp channels than to use one good one, so you don’t even know if you got em all. The other benefit of many mics is that they work even when one is not in the optimal position to receive inputs like left handed holding or in a bin of other remotes.

    Even if you did take the remote apart there’s no guarantee you would correctly recognize the microphones. On this very site is a highly upvoted post of a person triumphantly holding a resistor network and proclaiming they removed the mic from their remote. Next to the populated component labeled “m3”. M for microphone. 3 for the third one…

    That person isn’t stupid and I’m not making fun of them. That resistor network may have been connected to the mic and removing it may have achieved what they wanted. My point is that it’s hard to read and interpret a pcb and it’s silkscreen especially when you don’t have specialized experience.

    What you may have overlooked is the appletv4k. It’s really cheap and very functional. It is generally considered the most privacy respecting off the shelf streaming device. It doesn’t require any fucking around.

    However you’d have to have your own jellyfin or plex server. Not that that’s hard, I got a sixteen year old pc in a closet that serves multiple streams very easily.




  • The person who said file and mediainfo put you on the right track. You’ll figure it out.

    The video tapes do a somewhat decent job of correcting their own instability but cassette players need to be adjusted for wow and flutter as well as head azimuth. Make sure you’re using a player that supports the tape type and noise reduction scheme as well.

    E: you may need to fiddlefuck around to get good capture from that star tech card. Or maybe it’s fine to you.

    Also vlans for devices that aren’t trusted. Mac filtering is for sorting and automatically appropriately provisioning the good boy things you want on the network, a derek zoolander vlan for untrustworthy devices that need their requests selectively dropped is for everything you hate.




  • Hey, I think ai can be a useful tool and I use both cloud hosted and local models.

    The ecological impact is god awful.

    Datacenters run on fossil fuel turbines to meet demand when there isn’t enough capacity on the grid or just 24/7 because the residents of the nearby municipality said they don’t want brownouts.

    Fundamentally ai datacenters transform expensive to transmit electricity into cheap to transmit data, financializing what was previously a relatively insulated commodity whose pricing and production reflect local demand into a globally traded commodity whose pricing and production reflect global demand.

    If you don’t have a background in the history of industry and environment: that’s bad news for the environment (and anyone who relies on stable power rates).

    Production of ai computing components requires mining rare earth minerals and phenomenal amounts of power. This is the same process with nearly the same inputs as the production of general purpose computing parts (if you leave off the increased rare earths needed to mitigate electromigration in single digit nanometer processes!) but the increased demand has already brought more fabs up to meet it meaning more use of resources and energy in production before the first kilowatt of inference is run on those chips.

    Turbine blades for datacenter generators are also limited by production and are currently years out for delivery. These are components produced by advanced aerospace manufacturing shops which use massive amounts of energy to shape alloys of metals that have to be yanked out of the ground and smelted into some esoteric type of steel or aluminum first.

    So even without the water concerns datacenters have tremendous impact on the environment.

    But the water concerns are legitimate. Swamp chillers divert flowing water into the air where it is blown anywhere but where it would have flowed. Which is fine if you aren’t downstream of one I guess.

    All this is to say: if you don’t care about the impacts you can rationalize that however you like, but they exist.


  • Wilted collards

    That doesn’t mean old collards, it means separate the center stem from the leaves, cut them up and in the same pan you fried your bacon and eggs for your ramen, pan fry them until they turn a darker deeper green.

    It’s called kilt as well if you’re in a place where people do this.

    Save the cut up stems for stock or pickling. Pickled collard stems, bamboo shoots and watermelon rinds are good in ramen too.

    You can do this with all kinds of greens but some like turnip don’t need it.

    If you’re insanely poor and ill equipped, a half cup of the little frozen mixed vegetable cubes turns packet ramen into cup noodles.



  • “Nx” is usually a resistor “n”etwork. The mic is probably something else, it could be the M designators or even a “t”ransducer.

    Anyway you may find that the remote uses a bunch of mics. Once you’re no longer trying to catch sound in a way that will be discernible to human ears it can become an order of magnitude cheaper to send several fraction of a cent mics into the 69 dsp channels every fucking soc has nowadays. You’re getting the silicon for free, might as well use it.
