Mildly Interesting@lemmy.world•Oil prices crashed 19% from their peaks—here's whyEnglish
3·2 years agoIt’s not insinuating that at all, in fact the article is pretty clear that this isn’t some sign of things to come, it’s pretty much only because OPEC and the US have been increasing supply of oil even though demand has been fairly stagnate or dropping. OPEC usually will slow production when prices get too low so there’s a good chance prices will start going back up again soon. The only reason this would be sustainable is if they chose to continue this level of production which they’d only do if they felt it could benefit them long term (for example if they think lower gas prices will prevent an increase in EV purchases, which is possible but not likely at this point).

Mildly Interesting@lemmy.world•Oil prices crashed 19% from their peaks—here's whyEnglish
42·2 years agoThis article is about a 19% drop in the last 2 months. Alternative energy methods didn’t increase in popularity/use enough in the last 2 months to cause that much of a drop. The article uses a decent amount of actual data analysis and sources and shows a pretty clear causality between the growth of supply and the stagnation of demand that led to the price drop.
Renewable energy has definitely led to an overall drop in price over the last 15 years but it wouldn’t cause a drop this drastic without a huge increase in use or improvement in technology.

Technology@beehaw.org•Tinder Now Letting Rizzless Sad Sacks Pay $500/Month to Message People Without Even MatchingEnglish
3·2 years agoI’m finding out from this that it’s owned by the same company but Hinge has a better formula for that kind of thing. You comment on an aspect of their profile (a picture, their response to a prompt, etc) and that gets sent to them. Then they can reply (which triggers a “match”) or not. You can also send likes without a comment but obviously that won’t be as effective.

1·2 years agoThis is a problem with all of these Tik Tok clones (and even Tik Tok let’s you do it for some videos). It’d so annoying to be watching a 45 second reel but if I miss something, I have to watch the whole thing again

93·2 years agoI’ve noticed them doing more flavors in the US as limited releases. There was a churro one recently. Hopefully the trend continues and some stuff becomes permanent.

Technology@lemmy.world•It's not just you — no one is posting on social media anymoreEnglish
51·2 years agoWell “entertaining” is subjective. If these people weren’t entertaining, they wouldn’t have so many followers.
There are absolutely a ton of people out there taking advantage of certain people and manipulating them as opposed to actually being entertaining, but that’s not an “influencer” problem, that’s just a people problem. That happens in every industry with human interaction.
Plenty of influencers just post content they think their followers will like and use that following to make money as well. And a lot of the time, their followers actually enjoy the things they advertise.
And the great thing is if you don’t like the concept, you can just not follow them.

4·2 years agoGeez the pacing of the original is ridiculous. I could never sit through whole episodes of that lol. I might try out One Pace
It’s the same building, just edited. You can tell the bottom half of the center is exactly the same and the the near sections of the wings are pretty similar. They just swapped out the top part and changed the windows on the far sections of the wings.

271·2 years agoI’ve always been interested in One Piece but just can’t commit to that long of a show. I wonder if they plan to tell the story more succinctly (which might be difficult since my understanding is the story isn’t finished yet). If they do, I might check this out

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•It's probably more difficult for kids to throw house parties nowadays when their parents are out of town due to how accessible security cameras are.English
1·2 years agoThe latter for sure. And to be fair, my experience wasn’t identical to what the post was asking. It wasn’t so much a house party as it was having ~10 friends over. And my dad was often home, just already asleep. I definitely wouldn’t have tried to have a legitimate house party with the cameras around.

It’d be a lot easier to not make a bot at all if that was the case. They aren’t intentionally not trying to help, they’re intentionally spending as few resources as possible on helping while still doing enough to satisfy most customers. It’s shitty but it’s not malicious like you guys are implying.
