No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Why do pro athelets get paid millions upon millions of dollars but will be taken off field for something minor? My coach always said walk it off or tough it out. How come its not the same in leagues?English
2·4 months agoIt’s precisely because teams are signing multi million dollar contracts with these athletes. These organizations are smart enough to know that they will get a better long term return on investment from these athletes if they get proper evaluation, care, and rest from an injury than if they push the athlete to “play through” the injury.
Professional athletes are also much more self aware of what is an injury that needs rest and what is something that they can play through. See for example George Springer immediately taking himself out of the game during the World Series, knowing that it wasn’t something he could just “tough out”.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What's the oldest video game you still find yourself playing?English
1·4 months agoI’ve always enjoyed it more that Ocarina of Time but I get that Ocarina is more of the classic Zelda experience. There’s a quirkiness to Majora’s Mask that I really like and I know the game really well at this point so it’s always a blast to play through.
The recompiled Majora’s ran perfectly on my PC but I’m still struggling to find the right settings and texture pack for Ocarina to get it to run as crisp on my PC.
Majora’s Mask would be a lot less fun to play without two somewhat hidden Ocarina songs, the Inverted Song of Time and the Song of Double Time, otherwise it can get frustrating having to reset the cycle too often. Typically what you’re supposed to do is reach some milestone (like obtaining a mask or learning a song) and then reset the cycle so that you can start the dungeon on a fresh cycle.
I do want to get Ocarina going and play through that though, I figured I’d wait for it to be available in the same N64 recompile setup that Majora’s runs in to see if it runs better than SoH.

71·10 months agoAs skeptical as I am, I’m feeling pressure to join the BS train on this. It’s literally all over LinkedIn… Even though I’m sure it’s all mostly bullshit, it doesn’t matter that I think. What matters is that this is where billionaires are dumping their money so I need to be in a position to get some of it or I may not be able to be gainfully employed in 10 years.

Lemmy Shitpost@lemmy.world•You know which voice to use. We all know which voice to use.English
31·10 months agoJessica from Dune encourages her son Paul to use “the voice” which is some future space wizardry that allows him to control others.
In this case, the voice that Americans (probably mostly millennials) think of when someone says “my wife” is the voice of Borat, who develops an obsession with Pamela Anderson from a Baywatch poster and refers to her as his wife.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Why does America feel the need to control the world? Do what they say? Instead of taking care of their own problems at home? When did the US become police officer of the world and enforcer?English
8·10 months agoBecause authoritarians convinced the American people that military interventions prevent terrorist attacks to distract them from the reality which is that terrorist attacks are caused by American interventions.
It’s only possible to convince Americans of that because they are shockingly ignorant of history and they believe whatever the warmongers tell them.

Mildly Infuriating@lemmy.world•Oil company funds computer game that promotes fossil fuels to childrenEnglish
1·10 months agoThat does sound kind of messed up the way it is described in the article especially based on who is funding it. However, almost every city builder or factory game I’ve played involves use of fossil fuels for much of the game and you layer in better options as they become available.

3DPrinting@lemmy.world•3D-printed homes tested against earthquakes for the first time — 'Dramatic leap forward' hailed for potential use in earthquake-prone countriesEnglish
11·10 months agoIt seems cool but it’s really just printing a frame right? It’s not going to print the plumbing, electrical, HVAC, roof, septic, etc. That’s where a lot of the big costs for material and labor come in. I suspect this is why we haven’t seen this take off. Modular homes seem to have become popular and seem like a much more realistic way to mass produce homes because they can be made assembly line style in one place and then assembled on site.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Would AI replacing humans in every workplace eventually make it easier for an advanced civilization from outer space to colonize us?English
2·11 months agoIt’s an interesting thought, but an alien race could be more like hive insects and are just sending out ark ships as part of an instinct to survive and thrive in as many places as possible. Like the aliens in the Ender’s game series.
Or like the race that created the Protomolecule in the expanse, they sent a probe into a system that looked promising possibly even before humans existed and had no way to know if it had intelligent life and their probe is basically going to autonomously consume organic material as part of building a highway off ramp.

It could have been incompetence, yes… Or it could have been someone who knew this would slip by the Trump loyalists and end up getting published.
