Mildly Infuriating@lemmy.world•The Greek shipwreck was a horrific tragedy. Yet it didn’t get the attention of the Titanic story | Arwa MahdawiEnglish
1·3 years agoGuess I stand corrected then.
Controlling input devices is a massive PITA it turns out. What would be been a couple of lines with xinput involved a massive (to a beginner at least) stuff around with config files. There should be a GUI way to turn off input devices.

2·3 years agoTo be fair there was no one tracking the migrant boat because they were crossing illegally. We knew the sub went missing basically as soon as it did rather than when people started spotting bodies. In situations where migrant boats are found before/in the midst of sinking help is sent (although after that it’s probably a trip to the detention centre.)

Mildly Infuriating@lemmy.world•The Greek shipwreck was a horrific tragedy. Yet it didn’t get the attention of the Titanic story | Arwa MahdawiEnglish
2·3 years agoThe Greek shipwreck is an unfortunately common tragedy. Whether in the Mediterranean or elsewhere migrant bodies frequently wash ashore. The Titanic story is something novel, and I think at least partially people see it as something justified for adventure tourism exclusive to the extremely wealthy to end poorly. There is nothing to really get excitement out of from the shipwreck, it’s just sad.

Android@lemmy.world•Why do you personally prefer using an Android phone?English
1·3 years agoThe thing that can make up for lower Android longevity is the custom ROMs that might be out there (especially for common models like your pixel!) I do love the smoothness of the Apple ecosystem but alas I cannot afford it. I quite like Linux anyway.

Android@lemmy.world•Why do you personally prefer using an Android phone?English
13·3 years agoMainly that there are really solid midrange android phones nowadays. I just can’t justify the iPhone pricetag.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What kinds of things from reddit would you like to see Lemmy avoid as the user base grows?
0·3 years agoThat could be one conclusion since it may lead to more desirable outcomes. On the other hand, we generally don’t allow children to undergo other permanent procedures (eg. Nose jobs, tattoos etc.) because children change their minds. It can be argued that medical transition is necessary medical care (eg. like how we give chemo even though it may have permanent long-term effects.)
However, since dysphoria is a psychiatric diagnosis (there’s nothing physical to test like a tumour) we cannot be sure in the same way that treatment is medically necessary. Therefore, I believe that the care providers should have to be extremely sure that the child is not going to detransition before making any medical moves like puberty blockers or HRT. I’m not convinced they can be sure enough or at least that they are being that rigorous (they clearly weren’t here: https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-62335665.)

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What kinds of things from reddit would you like to see Lemmy avoid as the user base grows?
0·3 years agoThere are things that don’t completely change with HRT (particularly when started after puberty.) Height, bone density, lung capacity, hand/foot/limb size etc. do not vary significantly after HRT and depending on the sport can make a huge difference (eg. Hand and foot size or lung capacity in swimming even where the two swimmers are the same height.)
Classic useless answer but nothing ATM 🙃. I’ve been travelling for a few months and won’t be able to host anything til I get home mid July. However, I do have plans to host a website or two, maybe even a Bookwyrm, Lemmy or Mastodon instance.

Technology@beehaw.org•Tesla autopilot killed 17 and crashed 736 times
4·3 years agoEven in Europe though rural areas are a thing. I’ve lived in Australia and the UK, travelled extensively in Europe. Many European cities have excellent public transport, but if you need to get to a small town for whatever reason you can’t. In Australia it’s definitely better in the major cities than it is in US major cities but that are so few people and it’s such a large country that outside of those really big cities there’s very little.

Technology@beehaw.org•Tesla autopilot killed 17 and crashed 736 times
7·3 years agoTo be fair ‘no one needs it’ isn’t entirely true. There are many reasons someone who needs to get around might not be able to drive. For example, some people with epilepsy, senior citizens, teenagers going to work etc. I don’t need it but I’d love the convenience and stress relief of never having to drive again. Public transport could help some of this but some areas just aren’t populated enough for truly good public transport.
