Yesterday was my first time hearing Mariah Carey, it was a good run while it lasted. God speed those that have still avoided it.

1·5 days agoWhich change? My crisis of faith was because I went before God and got nothing. That’s not really supposed to happen in Mormon Doctrine.
My move away from antitheism was some people, well person actually, with more patience than I deserved. They slowly showed me bigotry, all bigotry, was wrong. By challenging my beliefs gently and letting me reveal my bigotry to myself. I was, thankfully, in the listening mood so I got there in the end.
Antitheism, at the time, had R. Dawkins, as a champion, skeptictube was doing it’s alt-right reveal with “feminist owned” vids every where. So yeah… Bigotry was/is in its bones

1·5 days agoPerhaps. Irrationality in itself isn’t evil though. We’re all irrational about somethings sometimes, that’s just what it is to be human. We just be meat sacks powered by cornflakes, it would be weird if we weren’t irrational.
My biggest problem with religion is the bigotry, religion certainly doesn’t have a monopoly on it though, and antitheism doesn’t make you immune. Antitheism is fertile ground for bigotry and the irrational justifications for it.
Anti-intellectualism, and the harm spread from anti-intellectualism, is awful though, no arguments from me. A lot of evil can arrive from believing one is “rational” while they’re blind to their own limits of perspective.
I have discovered a truly marvelous proof of this, which this
margincomment is too narrow to contain.
My fiancée and I making any decision. I’m always “good enough is good enough” and make terrible un-thought-out decisions because of it. She is always the “perfect option is out there, I just need to find it” and makes no decisions due to choice paralysis because of it.
We can mostly split decsion making between “unimportant and/or urgent” to me with “go/no go” input from her. And “life changing and/or unnecessary” to her with a baseline good enough input from me.
The mental load sorta works out. She’s responsible for few but big decisions with weeks of research, and I take on almost everything else. The argument is usually how important a decision is: is a tree just a tree (my domain), or are we going to remember that specific tree for years to come (I’ll go find a chair).

1·6 days agoMe too, I just also think that the antitheist movement (mostly vocal and unempathetic antitheists such as I was) is also a net drain on society.
I think people create god in their own image. They use doctrine to justify what they would have believed anyway. I was taught to be homophobic by homophobes, Leviticus was just the tool used to deliver the lesson.
Stopping being Mormon didn’t stop my homophobia, the lessons were deep and that came later. I think instead if I had internalised homophobia=bad earlier, I would have left the church as a by product. Internalising bigotry=bad got me to leave antitheism, is where I got that from.
So that’s where I’m at: champion human rights and people will leave toxic structures as a by product.

3·6 days agoThe zeal of a convert.
I dunno, my crisis of faith went from mourning to anger very quickly. I was quick to anger and held grudges like any immature man back then. Perhaps I just needed to work it out of my system. Now I’m more let live and let live, but it was a slow process filled with people with more patience than I deserved.

11·6 days agoAntitheism and egalitarianism (read anti-feminsm). I was an ubsufferable cunt. Not to excuse my cuntness, I was raised Mormon: condescending hatred of all those not like me was all I knew.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•What are your opinions of using Pi-hole for DNS within a homelab environment?English
2·10 days agoI run 2 instances of pihole/unbound as lxcs on my main server and local back up, works great.
If I didn’t have the two big boxes I’d use my pi4/zero2 to run two instances of pihole/unbound.
If I didn’t have my pis, I’d run 2 instances of pihole/unbound on literally anything I could install it on.
What I’m saying is that I consider pihole/unbound to be essential infrastructure at this point. I’m also trying to say I’ve broken my only instance of pihole enough times to understand the importance of redundancy.
I use Pis as a (sort of) hardware key to get family and friends onto my Tailscale VPN. They all have pihole too. I haven’t convinced any of them to get a pi0 as a redundant box, but I’m sure they’ll learn eventually too. No doubt it’ll be my problem.
Most of the music I haven’t listened to since highschool are joke music: Stephen lynch, amateur transplants, avenue q (I lied I went to see it since high school) and youtube joke music james@war, Mister safety, cows with guns. I don’t listen to it, I do sing a lot of it still though.
There’s some stuff too emo for me in there: Automatic Loveletter. Some edgy music: Bolt thrower. Also, “you wouldn’t know 'em” music: My Only Danger. The lost of “I don’t want to listen to”, but the list of “it’s not really available to listen to” is smaller… But mostly humourous music that hasn’t aged well or I played to death.
Like everyone else I carried a lot of my highschool music with me and just kept adding as I grew.

Science Memes@mander.xyz•Can I offer you a nice egg in this trying time? 🥚English
6·28 days agoWhy would there be a deviled egg, just left there on the windowsill for 12hrs, if not for you to eat it.
The last series I finished was “Kingdom of immortal lovers” by Ruby Roe. Which is some f/f BDSM vampire smut.
I think Ruby Roe is mainly f/f, but the above was more smut than fantasy. That said, I don’t go out of my way to read romance, so I really wouldn’t know.
I can’t recommend, or not recommend the series though, it wasn’t written for me. Just here to say Ruby exists for f/f fantasy smut.
It was my understanding that romance, as an umbrella, was the best seller of books.
The reason “just write smut” was the advice given to struggling authors was because the demand was there to make it a best selling genre, but people didn’t typically write it. Now it’s fairly saturated so the advice is less relevant.
Joke’s on me, I don’t like romantasy either. I like my fiction to be philosophy disguised as magic and spaceships.
Romance is what sells though, and I’m glad something sells to keep authors around writing my pensive wankery.
I did toy with the idea of writing the chapter long smut pieces I see around. Then decided I would have to devote more time than I want to devote to smut to do it right and not scam people.
I thought the advice was “just write smut”, is it “just write YA” now?
There goes my plan of writing Micro-Smut scenes and selling them for 99p self published. What have I been reading all this literature for as research?! I don’t even like smut!

1·1 month agoI loved early WTNV, the monster of the week format just suited me. Today is street sweeping day, RUN! As they moved to longer and longer arcs I fell a bit out of love, persisted a while, then dropped. I still go to their live shows when they roll through though.

PC Gaming@lemmy.ca•Valve says the Steam Machine is better than what 70% of PC gamers have at homeEnglish
2·1 month agoWhich is why I would be comparing the steam machine with Beelink and Minisforum. Can I get a reasonable uplift in performance at an affordable price? Yes, at this point the decision to relace my 970 is made, and I’m looking at what to replace it with. Valve, Beelink, minisforum, geekom…
I’m too lazy to research, design, collect parts, and build my own pc. So a Mini PC home console replacement is absolutely where I’m going. I’ll give valve some premium chops too. Although I run a couple Beelink minis as a home server, I trust valve to have better lifetime and 3rd party support over [insert generic Mini builder here]. Mostly the research if I’m honest. If someone gave me a pcpartpicker list beating the UM780 XTX in price and performance I’d probable do that, I’m just lazy.
I think I’m going to buy a PS3/XB360 era emulation capable mini (easily doable for sub $700 according to RetroGameCorps mini pc spreadsheet), I would like it to be Valve, I’m ok with it not being.

8·1 month agoCan confirm with my 970. But I would be comparing it to offerings from Beelink, or Minisforum, not the computer I already have.
