Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Why is phone number verification requeriment for online services sometimes considered a privacy/security risk?English
18·5 months agoAnother one is how most 2g and 3g services (some SMS and voice connections) have known vulnerabilities. Unfortunately not just software security vulnerabilities, but also bad actors that can lease access within that system. That combination can allow for attacks within the underlying systems that make the target completely unaware for periods of time that their messages and voice calls are being intercepted, including 2 factor authentication content over SMS.
Veritasium has a cool video about it. https://youtu.be/wVyu7NB7W6Y
If possible, it is best to not rely on SMS authentication for privacy.

Games@lemmy.world•Is there a point in the Dark Souls games where you're too high level to be expected to be summoned by anyone?English
6·8 months agoIf I recall correctly it sorta changes over the course of the games. I think DS1 was primarily focused on character level, or souls spent on levels, while DS2 had a separate tracking system based on how many souls you have collected in total. Can’t speak too much on DS3 though.
For DS1 and DS2 at least, you definitely can climb those ranks to the point it’s difficult to find someone else that’s online and in your bracket, yeah.

Cars - For Car Enthusiasts@lemmy.world•Those who drive stickshift, what is your most (and least) favorite reverse gear position?English
2·8 months agoMy last 6 speed was a combo of 1 and 4 sorta. All the way right and down position, but only accessible by pulling the collar on the shifter up. Maybe that’s the same as the knob pull you’re mentioning though.
I liked it though. Kept 1-6 in places that made sense, and never had an “oh fuck” moment going from 5-6 since reverse required the collar pull. It was a 2006 Tiburon Tuscani trim (US if that matters). RIP good buddy.

Linux Gaming@lemmy.world•Sid Meier's Civilization VII is Steam Deck Verified with the Linux version ahead of release on February 11English
37·1 year agoReally cool to see “mainline” titles getting this prior to release. Had a friend get pulled into Marvel Rivals who mainlines Linux at home, and he had actually 0 issues getting it running at the time. Literally just download and play. Civ also seems like the perfect game to play on a Deck, so this is a no brainer, but cool to see this stuff is getting more popular to support out-the-box.

Games@lemmy.world•Got any good strategy game recommendations?English
7·1 year agoMaybe not exactly what you’re looking for, but I’ve been playing Gloomhaven Co-op recently. Dungeon delver, turn based strategy with RPG elements and an interesting mechanic for managing your attacks and movement through an encounter.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•If you could broadcast one song into everyone's mind, with them feeling the same emotions as you, what would it be?English
1·1 year agoA short electronic instrumental that really isn’t all that complex or terribly interesting, but holds a true wealth of emotional context for me. It feels like the awkward first steps in a relationship until something clicks, and ends with a touch of melancholy to my ear.

Games@lemmy.world•How to decide what kind of controller one should purchase?English
34·1 year agoThis comment is how I always hope my info dumps go when someone asks me a technical question about something I have good experience in using. 10/10 comment, love it.
My thinly-veiled lack of understanding of Linux is in shambles. CPU optional?

Out of the loop@lemmy.world•What's up with the guy in a white t-shirt,(Olympic shooter maybe?) guy being popular in every meme on Lemmy right now?English
16·1 year agoFrom what I can tell, it’s a juxtaposition thing. Many of the other shooters used in memes have stances that appear outlandish, and have gear that looks a little strange, almost trending towards ridiculous. The man you’re referencing, Yusuf looks incredibly casual in comparison. His stance is at least recognizable as a shooting stance (even if it’s almost appears too casual), his hand is in his pocket, and he isn’t visibly using any of the gear that many other shooters are.
I haven’t kept track very closely outside of the memes, so I can’t comment on Yusuf’s performance in comparison to the others, but the memes paint his character to be someone that gets the task done with minimal resources, where the others are given the role of a “tryhard” for the sake of the meme.
Evidently the imagery of these competitive shooters resonated with enough people that Lemmy had a small breakdown, but I always love to see my Lemmy feed trend into one topic for an evening or two. We all remember the beef stroganoff incident.

Games@lemmy.world•Day 12 of posting a Daily Screenshot from the games I’ve been playing until I forget to post ScreenshotsEnglish
11·1 year agoNow I’m just curious about you, after seeing your posts. I’ve seen a couple of games come up more than once, but a pretty wide variety of games that usually take a lot of time to get through. Have you been hopping back and forth between some “new to you” games while you come back to Skyrim every now and again? I’ve seen a fair amount of RPGs of some variety, are those your mainstay for games?

PC Gaming@lemmy.ca•NVIDIA’s Open-Source Linux Drivers Rival Proprietary Versions: Unmatched GPU Performance Revealed - EconoTimes
7·1 year agoI personally have not moved to Linux as my daily juuuust yet, so I’m relatively uninformed, but I am curious. What were these “proprietary” versions the article mentions before the open source ones that it’s comparing against? Were they also Nvidia released, just closed source, or would those be from OEMs (Dell, Lenovo, etc) who include Nvidia hardware in their laptops/desktops that are shipping with Linux installed by default?
