I was just talking to my father last week about this exact thing. He built his house about 10 years ago and bought the land close to 30 years ago. He was a steel worker so not terrible pay but nothing amazing. That house today would be well over 1mil. No way he could have built it today. And we live pretty close to the middle of nowhere, Indiana. I pray I can buy my brother out one day, at this rate it’s the only chance I have of owning a nice house. Even with a STEM degree I’m looking at maybe 70k salary right now. Which I thought would be awesome when I started college but now that I graduated, I feel like anything under 6 figures will be hard to live a middle class life on. I guess I’m lucky I spent my 20s broke and homeless, I have learned to really stretch a dollar.

News@lemmy.world•This is not a forecast for 50 years time, it’s happening today.
14·3 years agoOn reddit I was banned for suggesting it would be better to force change now than wait until things are even worse.

Mildly Infuriating@lemmy.world•Everything has LEDs now and they drive me nutsEnglish
2·3 years agoYour not wrong, the led on the arduino is super bright. I think you can reflash to not have it turn on though.
I hadn’t used anything except my account logged in through RiF for 13 years. When I checked the front page as a guest I realized finally just how bad reddit is. All the posts were hot garbage surrounded by ads. I honestly don’t know how people use reddit now.

Technology@lemmy.world•AMAs are the latest casualty in Reddit’s API warEnglish
2·3 years agoAgreed, all it is now is a marketing stunt. Usually with responses built by some lawyer or publicist. But anyway, 1 horse sized duck or 100 duck sized horses?

1·3 years agoI haven’t looked at Mastodon at all yet so I don’t really know how it works, but from what I have gathered, it is not dissimilar from lemmy but for microblogs. I suppose the main similarity is its distributed network which I agree is a better solution than a centralized server. Hopefully that statement ages well.

1·3 years agoHeck i couldn’t easily check if diablo 4 servers were wonky because I can’t check the blizzard Twitter. Obviously this is less important than an amber alert. As another reply said, I think police need a better way to disseminate emergency information and that is on them. However something like server status is a perfect use of Twitter that is now close enough to impossible to do. If public agencies are going to continue using Twitter for these purposes, then something needs to change. Personally I’d be ok with the government having a little more say in things if we are going to continue viewing Twitter as a public service.

0·3 years agoI suppose this is a good place for my first post. I’m happy to be here. This has saved me from the withdrawals of losing reddit. I hope we can make this an active community.
In similar news, does anyone have a good replacement to Stitcher? Only a few days left and I’m really upset. First RiF now Stitcher. It’s been a bad summer.
