From just looking at this photo it feels like such an exposed/vulnerable spot for a little flying creature to nap, but, it knows better than me, and it’s likely not nearly as groggy as me waking up from a nap, either.
I believe it’s at the opening to the burrow, so it can quick scoot back in there.
I read something recently about how much owls actually sleep at a time, but I don’t remember the details. As much as I share here with you guys, I still read so much more I either forget to share or I feel is just extra details most of you won’t care about as much as the photos. But basically, they nap more than get deep sleep like we do. It’s like cat napping, where they still have one eye open a slit and are ready to spring to alert at any moment. They will get real sleep at some point, but there’s a lot more “resting their eyes” than solid slumber.
So I take this photo like when we have a pet appreciating a warm sunbeam. Like I just replied in the LEO post, this is another moment where I hope they are just getting a moment of true peace and calm and really get to enjoy being the fabulous creatures they are! Bird life seems so incredibly difficult, I want to believe they experience true moments of joy.
Burrowing: unleash righteous fury? Or nap?
Burrowing: . . . zzzzznkk . . .
I’ll usually choose the same! 😆
