It’s not that it’s hard to write a rule for “respectively”. It’s that it needs its own rule, specifically. The general rules don’t cover it.

Per formal linguistics, it’s “respectively”.
Like: Bob, Alicia, and Siobhan are a teacher, plumber, and electrician, respectively.
We know this means Bob is a teacher and Siobhan is an electrician, but trying to write rules for how English works that account for this usage is thorny.
Yes, I’ve eaten them many times.

George Washington Carver. Born enslaved, became a chemist, and proceeded to look around his community and ask, “What do we need? What do we have?” Most famously, what they needed was crop rotation. What they had to rotate in was peanuts, so they needed a market for peanuts, so GWC set out to create a bunch of peanut- and peanut-oil-based products. That’s just the most famous example out of many; he spent his whole adult life doing this over and over.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•What happened to society that we became afraid of a piece of paper? Like a write up at school or job, or a ticket, or a bill we know we can pay (but won't let us live 1 luxury) lincenses and others?

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What do you think about AI generated adult videos and AI love relationships?
4·6 days agoTwo very different things.
AI porn doesn’t need to exploit real people and is, as you say, a boon to those with impractical fetishes.
AI “relationships” are basically a mental health crisis.
