  • I like the article, but agree with so many of the comments here as well.

Ultimately I think one thing I’d love for would be a way to simply provide services (like Immich) for people but where the client is end to end encrypted, and neither the user nor the service has to worry about the how.

Example: how can I share an Immich with my family and friends, but where I don’t have access to any of their data. I.e. what signal does, but immich or any other service. I want to share my server with friends/family, but I don’t want access to any of their data. It isn’t a lack of trust, it’s that I don’t want that as even something they have to worry about

That same concept then extends here to community hosting. If we can solve the problem for a few, it should be scalable to many.

  • Thank you for the detailed reply! Yeah I realize now Mestastic.Org has everything I need.

    Planning to prolly get:

A rak wireless kit for a local repeater on my roof powered via PoE, and then a TTGO TEcho for my personal device.

I know that I should just get the latter and play with it first, but I live high on a hill with a great vantage point of the city so feels like a disservice to the community if I don’t also host a repeater.

One thing I’m curious about, is if I use it via poe, can I also send messages via the repeater? I.e. locally from my network initiate a message through my repeater?

I would want it in repeater mode so it would forward any message even ones I don’t have the encryption key for.

So, the reality is, getting out on any bike e or no is better than not riding a bike. There are proven health benefits for ebikes too, it’s not as much as non ebike, but it’s also non negligible.

IMO yes, start with a non ebike, but for a 20 mile commute, get an ebike. You’re already going to need to find another route, so it isn’t going to be a straight 20 miles, and if you’re doing it every day, the days you’re late you’re gonna drive, whereas with an Ebike, you’re more likely to do it every day. So set yourself up for success and get a cheap gravel bike and then a commuter centric ebike. Now to be clear, not the ebikes you don’t have to pedal. Get a tern hsd or something.

I am an avid cyclist, and I love having an ebike in the stable so that on days I’m late, I can still stay on a bike vs driving. Just stay away from the “ebikes” that you don’t pedal. Look for ones with the motor inbetween the pedals. I also kind of think saying to stay away from an ebike because you’re trying to get in shape is backwards. An ebike is an easier stepping stone towards being more active assuming you get the right kind.

Consistency is typically better for getting in shape than how hard you do it. So if you bike 1 or 2 times a week because you’re biking on the weekends, vs 5 (10 since 2x a day) commuting to work, the commuting on an ebike is probably going to actually net you more than the weekend warrior exercise.

Edit: one more thing. Route route route. It’s been said above, but finding the most bike friendly route to get somewhere is absolutely key. That means not biking on 55mph roads.

  • Yeah I agree with this. But then you have all the things thetyve taken away as well (account sharing etc…) and I could make a chart that shows the true price increases as well.

I think, frankly, all you have to do is look at Netflix’s ever increasing annual net income for a very similar chart to above. They are price gouging, despite any additional costs they may have

Furthermore, their content library hasn’t gotten better. They don’t have a lot of the aaa content they used to have. So yeah, people started licensing it for more, and in a lot of cases Netflix said, nah we’ll just have a shittier library.
